Many individuals do not respond adequately to traditional continuous acne treatments, including acutane, topicals and antibiotics. We now offer therapy that treats the various causes of acne. We have several different light and laser treatments that will reduce or eliminate the acne problem:
Isolaz Light Treatments: The Isolaz treatments are pore cleansing light treatments using a broadband light with gentle suction. The suctions helps to clear the pores of sebum and the light will attack the acne bacteria. This is a very gentle, effective treatment. A series of 6 treatments is recommended, spaced 1 – 2 weeks apart. Often the clients notice a significant improvement after the first treatment.
Smoothbeam: The Smoothbeam laser targets the sebaceous glands and reduces the sebum production. This will inhibit the formation of acne pustules for an extended period of time. Studies have shown that results can continue for 2 years and more. A dramatic, long lasting improvement can be achieved after 4 to 6 treatments.
PhotoDynamic Treatment: This is a treatment that uses a light activated topical lotion on the acneic skin. The topical lotion targets inflamed, abnormal parts of the skin and an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to activate the lotion. The lotion (Levulan) is applied to the skin for a period of about 60 minutes to 2 hours, then the IPL light is administed to activate the lotion. Immediately after the treatment, the client must stay out of sunlight for 36 hours. The skin will feel mildly to moderately sunburned and will peel for approximately 1 week. After the peeling, the acne will improve and the client will notice a reduction in oil production. Additionally, the treatment will produce smoother skin, with smaller looking pores and scars. A series of 3 or 4 Photodynamic treatments are recommended.
Often we will recommend using a combination of the above treatments to achieve the best long term results. Microdermabrasion is performed prior to the light treatment to enhance the effectiveness if the laser.
Sebaceous Hyperplasia:
This is a condition that occurs with oily skin and results in small skin colored pimples on skin. These pimples are not red and inflamed, but represent blocked pores from overactive oil glands in the skin. This condition can be treated with Smoothbeam and Photodynamic therapy . There will be a gradual reduction in the number and size of pimples due to the reduction of oil production
