Laser Treatment for Acne Vulgaris

New medical clinical studies now show that Acne can be drastically improved with the Smoothbeam™ Laser. This treatment inhibits the formation of acne pustules.

Many individuals do not respond adequately to traditional continuous acne treatments. We can now offer treatment that treats the sebaceous glands in the dermis of your skin.

The Smoothbeam™ Laser targets these glands resulting in prolonged reduction of oil secretions on the skin. A dramatic improvement can be achieved after 3 to 4 treatments with long lasting benefits.

How many laser treatments are required?
A series of 3 – 4 treatments are recommended to get maximum results. These are usually performed every 3 or 4 weeks. You will notice a gradual reduction in the number and severity of acne lesions over the next 3 weeks after your treatment.

Return to questions

How long will the results last?
This is a very new treatment, but studies have shown that the improvement is maintained for at least 6 months to 1 year after the last laser treatment.

Return to questions

Should I continue to use my acne creams and medications?
Most over the counter and prescription creams and medications can be continued during the treatment. Our physician will personally evaluate and advise you on this.

Return to questions

Can the laser work on other areas in addition to the face?
Yes, in addition to the face and neck, the laser has been used on the back area and could be used anywhere you might have acne.

Return to questions

How will my face look after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, there will be mild redness and swelling in the area treated. This will subside in about one hour. There are rarely any other after effects.

Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

The FDA has recently approved the Smoothbeam laser for the treatment of atrophic acne scars. Existing therapies including dermabrasion, excisions, ablation and chemical peels have not been entirely effective.

The Smoothbeam is a diode laser that emits a series of laser pulses that target the second layer of skin. The laser energy induces a mild thermal injury to the area of the scar. The body's response is to initiate the formation of new, organized collagen, which results in the "lifting" or "filling in" of the the indented area of the atrophic scar.

Return to questions

Will all my scars improve?
This laser works best with atrophic scars and a 40-50% improvement can be expected. The smaller "ice pick" scars are less responsive.

Return to questions

Will the laser improve my scars and my existing acne?
Yes, if you have active acne, the laser will treat that problem at the same time. In fact, by treating this acne, you will prevent further scarring. There is no extra charge for this benefit.

Return to questions

How long will the benefits last?
The results should last for several years at least. Because this is a relatively new treatment, we do not have any data about very long term results.

During the free consultation we will evaluate your concerns and goals and will recommend a treatment plan. Our on site physician will review this plan and answer any questions. Often, the best overall result can be achieved with non-ablative laser and microdemabrasion to improve the overall texture and clarity of the skin. Ask about internet specials and discounts.
